Montgomery’s aviation history dates back to 1910, when the city welcomed its first commercial air service at Maxwell Field. Dannelly Field opened at Montgomery Regional Airport’s current location in 1943, with commercial service beginning in 1946. Today, Montgomery Regional Airport is managed by the Montgomery Airport Authority and serves as an important transportation and economic-development hub for Central Alabama.
Leading MGM into its next chapter is Loyd L. Jenkins, III, who was appointed Executive Director in April 2026. Jenkins joined the airport in 2022 as Airport Police Chief, bringing a background in aviation and public safety to the role. His experience leading airport security and building relationships with regional partners has helped prepare him to oversee operations, infrastructure, air service growth and the passenger experience. He also holds the Certified Member designation from the American Association of Airport Executives, an internationally recognized credential in airport management.
With approximately 75 Montgomery Airport Authority employees and hundreds of additional airline, TSA, rental-car, concession and contractor partners, MGM’s focus is providing safe, efficient and convenient air travel. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines connect Montgomery travelers to major hubs including Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., and Houston, opening access to destinations across the country and around the world.
What sets MGM apart is its combination of connectivity and convenience. Easy parking, short walking distances, efficient security screening and a customer-focused team create a streamlined experience, while the airport’s broader role extends into military, general aviation, corporate, emergency-response and economic-development activity. MGM serves 16 counties, welcomes approximately 230,000 travelers annually and contributes more than $1.32 billion in annual economic activity to the region.
Recent momentum includes the addition of United Airlines’ twice-daily nonstop service to Houston, a nearly $5 million baggage-claim renovation, more than $8.5 million in federal funding for runway rehabilitation, and the installation of an innovative airfield lighting electrical center. MGM also continues to bring the community into the airport through programs such as the Runway 5K, Community of Christmas Trees and educational partnerships.
Looking ahead, MGM is focused on expanding air service, modernizing infrastructure and improving the passenger experience through its long-term Momentum initiative. For Jenkins and the airport team, success is ultimately about more than getting passengers from one destination to another. Every traveler who chooses to fly MGM helps support local jobs, strengthen existing air service and create opportunities for future growth.
