The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) has been a cornerstone of culture in Alabama since 1930. What began downtown has grown into a vibrant institution, supported by the City and County, and since 1988 located in the scenic Blount Cultural Park. Today, a staff of 48 dedicated professionals welcomes visitors of all ages to connect with art, creativity, and community.
At the heart of the Museum’s mission is a simple but powerful idea: art belongs to everyone. MMFA is free and open to the public, offering an impressive permanent collection, dynamic exhibitions, and the ArtWorks Interactive Gallery that sparks imagination in children and families. Outdoors, the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden extends that creativity into nature, serving both as an art space and a beautiful setting for events like weddings and festivals.
What makes MMFA unique is its ability to bring together history, community, and innovation. Its collection highlights nationally renowned artists like Bill Traylor and Anne Goldthwaite, alongside contemporary local talent featured in the Museum Shop. Works from Montgomery are also loaned to museums across the country, a testament to the institution’s influence and reputation.
Recent milestones include being named a Blue Star Museum, providing military families with special access, and being chosen as the site host for the Southeastern Museums Conference opening reception this October. Exciting new exhibitions and events—like the upcoming Bill Traylor drawings showcase and Fall Festival—continue to cement MMFA as a hub for creativity and connection.
The Museum thrives because of strong public and private partnerships, the vision of its board and staff, and the generosity of members and donors who believe in the power of art to inspire. As Alabama’s first art museum, MMFA carries forward a proud legacy while looking to the future, with exciting projects on the horizon—including a major retrospective of artist Willie Cole in 2027.
