The Heart of Alabama Food Bank has been a beacon of hope since its founding in 1986. Their mission is to source, acquire, and distribute nutritious food to those facing hunger and food insecurity, helping families, seniors, and children across the region to thrive.
Dedicated to enhancing their impact, The Heart of Alabama Food Bank has significantly increased their food distribution, expanding from 29.5 million pounds to 33.4 million pounds, or the equivalent of 834 semi-truck loads of food. This equates to over 27.8 million meals provided across 35 counties. Their commitment to excellence has earned them a Superior rating from AIB International for food safety operations, a historic achievement for the organization.
Amid the challenges of inflation, The Heart of Alabama Food Bank has continued to meet critical food needs through improved processes and inventory automation, leading to a substantial 3.9-million-pound increase in distribution.
The staff at The Heart of Alabama Food Bank are integral to their success. With approximately 50 dedicated employees, the Food Bank operates with the understanding that failure is not an option, as it would mean people going to bed hungry. The organization encourages everyone to contribute to the fight against hunger, whether as a donor, volunteer, or community advocate.
Over the last year, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank has launched two new programs. “Food As Medicine” provides essential nourishment to individuals facing serious health issues. “Hero’s Harvest” provides direct service delivery to active-duty military. By serving their fellow Alabamians with dedication and care, The Heart of Alabama Food Bank continues to make a meaningful difference, ensuring that every senior, adult, and child has enough to eat.
