For nearly 40 years, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank has been a trusted partner in the fight against hunger, serving families, children and seniors across Central Alabama. Since 1986, our mission has remained the same: to source, acquire and distribute nutritious food while bringing communities together to ensure no neighbor faces hunger alone.
Last year, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank provided just under 25 million meals across the 35 counties we serve. Behind every meal is a network of generous donors, dedicated volunteers, community partners and over 200 local agencies (food pantries) working together to reach families where they live. Every day, trucks leave our warehouse carrying hope to communities across the region, ensuring nutritious food reaches those who need it most.
As more families continue to feel the effects of rising costs and changes to food assistance programs, the need for charitable food remains high. The Heart of Alabama Food Bank is committed to meeting that challenge by strengthening partnerships, improving efficiencies and ensuring our network of agencies has the resources needed to continue serving their communities.
That commitment extends beyond the food itself. Earlier this year, the Heart of Alabama Food Bank earned an outstanding score of 925 out of 1,000 on its AIB International Food Safety and Food Defense audit, placing the organization among AIB’s top-performing facilities. This achievement reflects HAFB’s unwavering commitment to maintaining exceptional standards in the handling, storage and distribution of food entrusted to the organization by donors, manufacturers and community partners.
Behind every meal is a team of approximately 50 dedicated employees who understand that the work they do each day has a direct impact on families across Central Alabama. Together with volunteers, donors and community partners, they continue building a stronger, healthier future for the region.
As the Heart of Alabama Food Bank celebrates its 40th anniversary, the mission remains as important as ever. Through the generosity of the community and the strength of its partnerships, HAFB continues to provide nutritious food, inspire hope and help ensure every neighbor has the opportunity to thrive.
