The Montgomery Housing Authority (MHA) was established in 1939 as a local public agency responsible for administering publicly funded affordable housing in Montgomery. For more than 85 years, MHA has worked to ensure individuals, seniors, veterans and families have access to safe, stable and affordable housing. Today, the organization has approximately 64 employees working across housing operations, maintenance, real estate development, finance, resident services, human resources and administration to serve households throughout the region.
MHA’s primary focus is providing and preserving quality affordable housing. The organization owns or manages approximately 1,100 public housing units and administers more than 3,000 Housing Choice Vouchers across Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore counties. Its work extends beyond housing through programs supporting employment, education, financial stability, homeownership and long-term self-sufficiency. MHA also provides specialized assistance for veterans, young adults transitioning from foster care and other vulnerable populations while partnering with developers, government agencies, educational institutions and community organizations to expand affordable housing opportunities.
What distinguishes MHA is its understanding that housing is more than a unit or a subsidy—it is a foundation upon which individuals and families build their lives. Stable housing can influence education, health, employment, neighborhood safety and economic mobility. MHA represents both the history and future of affordable housing, from Paterson Court, constructed in the 1930s and recognized as one of the nation’s oldest remaining public housing communities, to modern mixed-income developments. Recent accomplishments include earning High Performer status under HUD’s Section Eight Management Assessment Program and completing Columbus Square III, a 60-unit mixed-income development that brings the larger Columbus Square community to 220 units.
Looking ahead, MHA is focused on redevelopment, preservation and opportunity, with the transformation of Paterson Court into a modern mixed-income community among its major priorities. The organization is also advancing additional mixed-income and project-based voucher developments, strengthening safety measures, expanding homeownership and workforce-development initiatives and building partnerships with organizations throughout the region. Ultimately, MHA’s goal is not simply to replace aging housing, but to create communities that connect residents to education, employment, transportation, safety and economic opportunity. After more than 85 years, MHA remains committed to moving Montgomery forward—one family, one home and one community at a time.
