City of Montgomery
The Face of First Responders
The Montgomery Police Department (MPD) and Montgomery Fire/Rescue stand as twin pillars of safety and service in Montgomery. Since 1820, when Benjamin Hassell was elected as the first “Collector and Constable,” MPD has been committed to protecting the public. Over the years, the department has evolved, focusing on reducing crime and building strong partnerships with the community and local businesses.
Today, under the leadership of Interim Chief of Police James N. Graboys, MPD collaborates with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and other key partners to target violent and repeat offenders. This strategic alliance, coupled with the deployment of SWAT and Gang Suppression Units, has led to a significant reduction in crime, making the area safer for all residents.
In parallel, Montgomery Fire/Rescue has set the standard for fire service excellence since 1898. With a team of 427 employees under the guidance of Chief Miford Jordan, the department’s mission is clear: to protect Montgomery through prevention, preparedness, and effective emergency response. Recognized as a leader within the industry, Montgomery Fire/Rescue has earned an ISO Class 1 rating, international accreditation, and ambulance accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to excellence.
Beyond fighting fires, the department excels in emergency medical services and special operations, such as those performed by the Heavy Rescue, Hazmat, and Dive Teams. Their capabilities will soon be further enhanced by the addition of 16 redesigned ambulances, ensuring faster response times and improved service.
