Alabama state university

The Face of Continuing Education

Alabama State University, with its 156-year legacy, stands as one of the nation’s oldest institutions dedicated to higher education for Black Americans. Located in Montgomery, the university’s deep connections to the civil rights movement and African American culture are pivotal to its identity. Today, Alabama State University continues to uphold its storied tradition by fostering a diverse student body and offering a wide array of academic programs.

Under the leadership of Mia Oliver Williams, Ed.S., Director of the Division of Continuing Education, ASU remains committed to aligning its educational offerings with the university’s strategic vision. Williams and her team focus on delivering non-credit classes, workshops, and professional training courses tailored to meet both community and organizational needs. This commitment is exemplified through their specialized youth and personal development programs, designed to address local demands and enhance individual growth.

Williams emphasizes the rewarding nature of building community partnerships and providing diverse learning opportunities. Her leadership ensures that the Division of Continuing Education supports non-traditional and post-traditional learners in achieving their academic and professional goals. The division’s efforts have opened new pathways for individuals to design personalized educational journeys, allowing them to acquire skills and credentials that may have previously been thought unattainable.

Outside of her professional role, Williams is deeply passionate about her faith, family, and ongoing education. She values her strong family bonds and sees continuous learning as essential to her personal and professional development. Her dedication to advancing educational and career training in Alabama reflects her commitment to addressing critical workforce development needs.

Alabama State University, through its Division of Continuing Education, continues to honor its rich heritage by empowering individuals and contributing to community growth.
