Since its start in a high school auditorium in Anniston back in 1972, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival has grown into one of the country’s leading professional theatres—and a true cultural treasure for the state. Designated as the State Theatre of Alabama in 1977 and relocated to its beautiful $21.5 million performing arts complex in Montgomery in 1985, ASF is now preparing to celebrate its 40th season in the Capital City.
What makes ASF remarkable is not just its history, but the scope of its work. With 78 year-round employees and as many as 150 when productions and youth programs are in full swing, the theatre brings together world-class talent from across the nation. Members of Actors Equity Association, the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and United Scenic Artists collaborate alongside local staff, creating Broadway-caliber productions right here in Montgomery.
Each season, ASF offers something for everyone—Shakespearean classics, contemporary dramas, inspiring new works, musicals, and theatre for young audiences. Its SchoolFest program alone brings nearly 35,000 students to experience live theatre each year, continuing ASF’s mission of arts education that has touched more than one million students since its founding.
This fall marks the beginning of a new chapter under Artistic Director Quin Gresham. The 2025–2026 season opens October 2 with Murder on the Orient Express and continues with an exciting lineup including Disney’s Frozen, Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and the Broadway hit Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. With each performance, ASF continues to deliver on what it does best—connecting audiences through stories of love, family, history, and reinvention.
Nestled in the heart of Blount Cultural Park, ASF is more than a theatre—it’s a gathering place where community and culture meet. Its success is rooted in the unwavering support of passionate theatregoers across Alabama and beyond, and in its dedication to delivering unforgettable experiences for every audience member.
